Available sources of DEM - DSM data

  • SRTM DEM

    • U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) provides a tool Earth Explorer [8], with the help of which several different digital elevation maps could be searched, viewed, and downloaded (e.g., GMTED2010, GTOPO30, SRTM, etc.). The SRTM data is available for both 1 Arc-Sec (30 m resolution) and 3 Arc-Sec (90 m resolution) in three different formats: DTED, GeoTiff and BIL. In order to download maps, an account needs to be created and approved by the USGS.

  • ASTER DEM

    • NASA provides a tool EarthData Search [9], with the help of which maps in ASTER Global Digital Elevation Model V003 (1 Arc-Sec, 30 m resolution) can be downloaded. A registration is necessary to open an EarthData account, but the “EOSDIS data are openly available to all and free of charge except where governed by international agreements.”

    • Another tool that provides ASTER GDEM freely and without a need for registration is from the Japan Space Systems web page [10] (also only Model V003).

    • ASTER files are provided in GeoTiff format and only available for 1 Arc-Sec resolution. The 3 Arc-Sec resolution maps used for testing of EPP are not available for download anymore. The implementation of handling the GeoTiff binary files is hardcoded and customized to one specific format (Version 002). This section of the code would need to be updated in order to be capable of handling new version of binary ASTER GeoTiff DEMs.

    • Aster GeoTif files are available from open-source repositories:
